            I attended the first class of RUS 101, Integrated Studio at 9am today. The first part was about the objective of the studio. I get to know that the studio with a total of 5 unit will let us gain knowledge, prepare and work on the fundamental tools we need to take part in the development of built environment. 

            I was educated about the definition of READ. What is the true meaning of READ? According to the English Mini Dictionary, read is defined as speak written or printed words aloud. Since I was young, my parents have always encouraged me to read books and other reading materials such as magazines and newspaper to widen my knowledge. All this while I think of READ as see through and understand. However, through the explanation of my lecturer, i understand that there are six important elements needed to read.

            The first element is Intention. This is the most important element as this is the start of everything. Only with intention, a person can get things started. For example, a person must have the intention of cleaning so that he can start to think what he needs for cleaning. Before we can have the intention to do anything, we must have the knowledge on what the thing is so that we will be willing to do it. This is very virtual for reading as we need to be alert of what we are going to absorb.

            Intention leads to the second element that is the Actors. Actors are people that are having intention on something. For example, in the cooking industry, the actors are the chefs. Without them having the intention to cook the food in a clean and nice manner, the food that we eat won't be delicious hygienic enough. The same applies to reading as we as actors play the main role in understanding and digesting what we read.

            The third element is Act. After having the intention of doing something, we should perform according to what we have intended. For example, in building a house of one's own, the act is to find the best ideas of building the ideal house and do work in full efficiency. The act in reading is to understand and think what we have read so that we can apply the knowledge we gained in our daily life.

            The fourth element is Rules which is related to the act that we do. Whatever we do, we must follow the rules which is based on the suitability of place and people. For example, we should dress up according to the situation and respect the people around us. Reading should also be according to rules.

            The fifth element is the Product. After working hard doing the acting, we will have the outcome we wanted. For example, after studying hard each day and night, a student can have excellent results which is the product. After reading something, we will get the product which is the information that is surely useful to us.  

            The last element is the Site. The product of something should be produced on a site. Examples of sites are lands and websites. We should apply what we read in the site or place that is suitable so that we can be a person that is productive and can contribute to the society.

            Besides the six elements, I was introduced to the five tools we will learn in this integrated studio. They are document, communicate, design, construct and serve. Documenting involves text and images that are either still or moving. Communicating will be taught using models where we will present, argue, show, exhibit and negotiate. We will learn designing images, objects, prototypes, spaces, events and happennings. Moreover, construct will involve creating a page which is more valuable than a page in history. We should be prepared to serve the bottom billions who are those in poor condition and also the top-ten of the society. 

            Apart from that, i was exposed to plagiarism. According to English Mini Dictionary, plagiarism is the act of taking somebody else's work, ideas, words, etc and pretend they were one's own. I clearly understand that plagiarism is a crime. It is not fair to people if we steal their ideas and admit that they are our own. I think that we should be aware of how serious is this problem in students nowadays and talks should be conducted to increase awareness among students. I am sure that I won't commit plagiarism in every assignment I do.
